White Sox trade rumors: Dayan Viciedo drawing interest from Giants, Mariners

Tom Szczerbowski

The M's have had interest in Viciedo dating back to 2012 and could be looking to swing a deal.

After moving Jake Peavy, Matt Thornton, Jesse Crain and Alex Rios in a summer sale last season, the White Sox are expected to be sellers once again. According to a report from ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes, outfielder Dayan Viciedo is a candidate to be dealt by the White Sox before the trade deadline, and is drawing interest from the Mariners and Giants.

Viciedo, 25, has hit .242 with 9 HR and 29 RBI in 82 games for Chicago this season. He is known as a solid power bat from the right side, which is what league sources indicate is exactly what the Mariners are looking for at the deadline. Seattle has shown interest in Viciedo dating back to 2012 (CBS Chicago's Bruce Levine reported discussions between the two sides as recently as March), so their continued pursuit makes sense.

Edes notes that the Mariners are considering a deal that would send right-hander Brandon Maurer and an additional player to the White Sox in exchange for Viciedo. Maurer, who was once considered a top prospect in the Mariners organization, has struggled mightily in 32 major league appearances (21 starts) since breaking into the majors last season, posting a 6-12 record and 6.36 ERA in 127.1 major league innings. He would seem to be a great change-of-scenery candidate in a potential Viciedo deal, and at 24 years old, would seem to be a good fit for a rebuilding White Sox organization.

The Giants would likely have to give up a pitcher similar to Maurer in a package for Viciedo, but the extent of their interest is not yet known. Edes also speculates that the Red Sox, who are looking for offensive help in the outfield, could also jump in the Viciedo sweepstakes if they are willing to part with a young pitcher like Brandon Workman or Allen Webster.
