The White Sox have acquired right-hander Anthony Ranaudo from the Rangers for minor-league righty Matt Ball, according to team announcements. Ranaudo was immediately optioned to Triple-A Charlotte.
Ranaudo, 26, will provide back-end rotation depth for a White Sox club that recently cut ties with veteran John Danks and has been looking for additional rotation options. Chicago currently has Miguel Gonzalez slotted into its fifth rotation spot and is seriously pursuing Tim Lincecum, but the addition of Ranaudo will give the team another option for the rest of the season.
Ranaudo appeared in two major-league games for Texas this season, allowing seven earned runs in 3.2 relief innings. He has appeared in 13 major-league games (9 starts) with the Red Sox (2014) and Rangers (2015-16), and owns a career 5-4 record and 6.33 ERA. Ranaudo was the 39th overall pick out of LSU in the 2010 draft, and was considered one of Boston's top prospects before being traded to Texas in exchange for Robbie Ross before last season.
Ball, 21, was Chicago's 11th-round pick in the 2013 draft and has made 10 relief appearances so far this season for Single-A Kannapolis. He is the owner of a career 6.98 ERA in 53 minor-league appearances (28 starts), and is not listed among MLB.com's top 30 White Sox prospects.
