If this really happens -- and again, this hardly seems an authoritative report but Madden has been in the business for a long time and presumably has some excellent sources -- it's not exactly the end of the world. Yes, the A's will explore other sites. But Portland and Las Vegas and San Antonio aren't exactly screaming for Major League Baseball and the Yankees and Mets won't let the A's move to Brooklyn or New Jersey. It's really hard to win in a stadium like the Coliseum ... but it's hard to win where the Rays play, too, and yet somehow they've been doing it.

MLB Playoff Expansion Might Force Division Winners To Open On Road - Baseball Nation

Amy K. Nelson of Baseball Nation is reporting that the new playoff format could mean that division winners would be forced to open the playoffs on the road, potentially in a shudder-inducing 2-3 format rather than the 2-2-1 format traditionally played: Both the players' union and MLB are still finalizing discussions, but a source told SB Nation that the 2-3 format has already been agreed upon if there is no way to keep the 2-2-1 format. The change will only be in place for the 2012 postseason, because a National League team is expected to move to the A.L. next season, which will equalize both leagues with 15 teams.

These are four pretty significant injuries, and they're injuries to four talented players on similar teams. The Indians, the Mariners, the Pirates, the A's -- in 2012, they're all long shots. Their combined playoff odds based on those projected standings above are 48.1 percent. It's not quite fair to include the Indians with the others, since they're in a much better position, but they're not the Tigers. And there'll be a hell of a lot of competition for the wild cards. Mathematically, none of these injuries is devastating. If you have even a passing familiarity with WAR, you know that the best players in baseball are worth eight or nine or ten wins above a replacement player in a season, and none of those players above are among the best players. Maybe the Indians project one or two wins worse without Sizemore. Maybe it's a game or two for the Mariners, Pirates, and A's...

The Rangers have reminded teams that you don't need to sign free agent starters or promote prospects to improve your own rotation all of the time, as maybe you have upgrades you haven't been properly utilizing already. Four other teams might all be better in 2012 for following suit; if that's the case, you'll see the other 25 tag along soon enough.

Geoff Baker's a good reporter, and so I tend to believe him. And here's something else I think ... If management is keeping Figgins around just so they can say they tried -- you know, as opposed to thinking it will actually work -- then something's wrong at the top. I mean, there's also the obvious inability to understand that Figgins is simply a sunk cost, unless they really do think that he's got something left. Which he probably doesn't. Oddly enough. On the plus side, keeping Figgins means the Mariners might actually get something out of him, to the point where they might actually be able to trade him for, at the very least, a bit of payroll relief.
