It has been reported that Chris Carpenter might have bone spurs, which will require surgery. While the team doctor remains optimistic and the swelling has decreased a little bit, but it is still swollen. Carpenter has this problem back in 1999, and had surgery to get them removed. If Carpenter (0-1) does require surgery, the Cardinals will probably look to their minors for help, calling up pitching prospect Blake Hawksworth. Cardinals pitching is already weak, and this shouldn't help their chances of taking the division again.
