Mets May Pursue Putz

According to the New York Post, if the Mets fail to bring in one of their closer targets, they will target Mariners closer JJ Putz, who may be made available this offseason. Putz went 6-5 with 15 saves in 47 games this season, but is one of the best closers in the game if put on a team that would put up solid win totals. Putz, 31, will make five million in 2009 with a club option for 2010, so he is very affordable. The Mariners will likely hold on to Putz because they expect some of their struggling pitchers to have better years next year. If five wins go the other way for Washburn, Silva, and Hernandez, it would give them seventy-five wins. They will need a reliable closer like Putz to be able to put those games away.
