Quick Hits: Ordonez, Bonds, Peavy, Papelbon

Quick Hits:

  • Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordonez is off to a terrible start, hitting just .241 with 2 homeruns in 30 games. The Tigers will owe Ordonez 18 million dollars if he reaches 457 plate appearances this season. He almost certainly will reach that number, unless he lands on the disabled list or the Tigers choose not to play him, which would likely result in a grievance. If the Tigers were to release him, they would owe him 17.5 million, which is a lot better than the 33 million (through 2011) that they would have to pay him if they keep playing him.
  • L.A. Times writer Bill Shaikin writes about the possibilities of Barry Bonds signing with an Independent team. His agent, Jeff Borris, downplayed the speculation.
  • Had a nice chat with Padres ace Jake Peavy today before the Cubs/Padres game tonight. Also talked with manager Bud Black, Cubs pitchers Randy Wells and Jose Ascanio, and others.
  • SI.com's Jon Heyman has yet another great piece up on the news around baseball. He talks about Jonathan Papelbon's save celebration, calling it "downright nutso."I tend to agree, and think Papelbon's antics are a little unnecessary.
