Blue Jays sign Alex Gonzalez

New, comment

Happy Thanksgiving Day, everyone!

The Blue Jays have signed shortstop Alex Gonzalez to a one year deal with a club option for a second, signaling the end of Marco Scutaro in Toronto.

Gonzalez, 32, gives the Jays one of the better double play combos in the league, with All-Star Aaron Hill at second base. Gonzalez hit .284 in 44 games with the Red Sox, and the Jays hope his success in the AL East will continue.

This move certainly changes the Red Sox plans, who viewed Gonzalez as a fall back option. If they decide to pursue Scutaro, they will be forced to surrender a draft pick, which is not ideal for the Sox considering they appear willing to move a package of prospects for a premier player.
