The Mets are reportedly closing in on a deal with free agent catcher Henry Blanco. The Venezuelan national paper, El Nacional, reported that Blanco left Venezuela Sunday for New York to take a physical.
Reports coming from Central and South America sometimes get lost in translation by the time they are reported here, but Blanco is one of Venezuela's most popular players, so this report may hold true.
Blanco is expected to be the teams primary back up catcher, so the team is sill looking for a No.1 starter. Adding Blanco makes me think they may go younger, considering that Blanco is regarded as a great mentor who works well with his pitchers.
Ryan Doumit and Miguel Montero could be options via trades.
