Thursday Afternoon Quick Hits

  • The Seattle Times is reporting that the Mariners are making a strong push for free agent outfielder Jason Bay. Seattle is showing some signs of life, but need a strong pitching staff before a big bat like Bay will turn them into a contender. A good move by GM Jack Zduriencik, but a smarter move may be to pursue an outfielder via trade, and go after free agent ace John Lackey
  • Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker is reporting that the Mets have requested the medical records of free agent outfielder Hideki Matsui. Matsui had a pretty good year, but was exclusively a DH during the regular season and much of the postseason. If he is up for first base, and his knees could handle it, he could be an option. Highly doubtful, in my opinion.
  • According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates are interested in bringing back free agent outfielder Xavier Nady. Nady isn't expected to be ready until June or July of 2010, but he is a very productive player who could benefit the Pirates.
  • The Rockies have expressed preliminary interest in free agent infielder Chad Tracy, Troy Renck of the Denver Post is reporting. Tracy is a lefty, but could fill a role similar to what Jason Giambi did late last season.
