P John Smoltz, in his first outing since undergoing surgery to repair his right shoulder on June 10, 2008, was roughed up by the Washington Nationals to the tune of 5 runs, 7 hits, 1 BB and 5 strikeouts on 92 pitches. Not a nightmare performance, but not what Red Sox fans were hoping for against the lowly Nationals.
This was Smoltz's first start for anyone other than Atlanta Braves, with whom he had played his entire career dating back to 1988. There will certainly be an adjustment period for him, not only acclimating himself to the new environment as well as life in the American League, but also finding a niche within the clubhouse. Once this happens, assuming his health concerns are behind him, expect Smoltz to be a major contributor for the Red Sox as the season progresses.
