Cardinals closing in on deal for Matt Holliday's Jim Bowden is reporting that the Cardinals and Matt Holliday are closing in on a 5-6 year deal worth 98.5 million dollars.

The Cardinals were all but out of the race for Holliday a couple of weeks ago, when talks reached an impasse and Holliday was talking with the Mets and Angels. After those talks failed to materialize into a formal contract offer, Boras returned to the Cardinals to receive the best offer possible.

In the end, Holliday made the right decision. His numbers were seriously improved by Albert Pujols, and vice-versa. Having the additional lineup presence that was missing in Oakland and Colorado was apparent in 2009, after Holliday hit .353 with 13 home runs in 63 games with the Cardinals.
