MLB.com is reporting that the Mets are very interested in free agent first baseman Carlos Delgado.
Delgado was limited to just 26 games in 2009 before undergoing season-ending right hip surgery in May, but he still finished batting .298 with a .393 on-base percentage, four home runs and 23 RBIs. In his last full season in '08, the 37-year-old first baseman batted .271 with 38 homers and 115 RBIs.
The Mets will only consider Delgado on an incentive-laden contract, perhaps a base salary around 1-1.5 million dollars with in-season performance bonuses. Otherwise, they will stick with David Murphy, who hit .266 last season.
Delgado is currently playing in the Puerto Rican Winter League.
