The Mets interviewed former Royals GM Allain Baird for their GM vacancy on Monday, but multiple reports suggest that the team is leaning towards hiring Padres exec Sandy Alderson.
Baird had an interesting run with the Royals, having a few good pick ups but in large part missing out on several draft picks and free agent signings. His best draft pick will certainly go down as Zach Greinke, but Billy Butler is also proving himself, and there is still glimmers of hope for Alex Gordon to be a producer. However, he is close to going down, if he hasn't already, as a bust.
He did trade Johnny Damon and Mark Ellis back in 2001, but his notable free agent pick ups include Raul Ibanez, Mark Grudzielanek, and Reggie Sanders.
I'd say he is an outside candidate for the Mets, but could make for an executive with the Mets or another team.
