The Pirates designated left-handed pitcher Zach Duke for assignment today after posting an 8-15 record with a 5.72 ERA and 96 strike outs to 51 walks. It was his worst ERA in an already disappointing six-year stint with the Pirates.
Duke has the ability to win games but has played on a team with virtually no run support and that was out of playoff contention by July. I would not be surprised to see the Diamondbacks or Padres make a run at him. He is a durable lefty pitcher who could very well put up double-digit wins on a run-producing team.
The 27-year old pitcher will draw steady interest from around the league, particularly from the Mets, Marlins, and Cardinals. Once Duke is a free agent, you can bet he will go to a team that is in the best chance to win.
