The Mets have hired Terry Collins as their new manager for the 2011 season. Bob Melvin will likely not stay with the team, and Chip Hale will likely stay with the team. Wally Backman will be asked to stay.
Collins, a former Angels and Astros manager, worked in the Mets organzation in 2010 as the minor-league field coordinator.
Collins was 444-434 in his MLB managerial career so far, but has not avoided controversey. In 1999 Collins resigned as manager of the Angels with 29 games left when players tried to get him fired. In 2002 Collins was charged with DUI.
Collins' Astros finished in 2nd place all three years with him managing the team.
In my opinion the Mets made the wrong choice, as Melvin is the calmer, less risky of the main two candidates. Collins was hated by the Angels players and fans, and Melvin won manager of the year in 2007.
