This is unexpected, but Lance Berkman has signed a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals. Berkman will make $8 million with the Cards, and will play left field.

The Cardinals were not expected to sign him, due to their lack of a position available for Berkman, who was expected to be a 1B/DH type of player. Berkman, who has said he hates playing DH, will get to play the outfield like he wants to in St. Louis.

St. Louis will move Matt Holliday to right field, and will have to depend on Berkman to produce as an every day left fielder. This is a bold move for the Redbirds, and one that we will be watching closely to see if it pays off.
