Mariners close in on Erik Bedard

MLB.com's Jim Street is reporting that the Mariners are close to resigning free agent pitcher Erik Bedard. Bedard appeared in 15 games last season, posting a 2.82 ERA and striking out 90.

Bedard is likely looking at a one year incentive-laden contract to prove that he is healthy. He will be joining an improved rotation, meaning if he can return to 2007 form, the Mariners would be in a great position to take over the AL West.

Take a look at this possible rotation:

Felix Hernandez (RHP)

Cliff Lee (LHP)

Erik Bedard (LHP)

Ian Snell (RHP)

Ryan Rowland-Smith (LHP)

However, there are conflicting reports out about when Bedard will be healthy enough to pitch. One source told MLB.com that he could be ready to go by July, however he believes a return in May is possible. Having Bedard in the fold for down the stretch puts lets pressure on the front office to bring in another pitcher if the team starts to struggle.
