Maybe it is a little early to be ranting and raving over Mets pitcher Jon Niese's 5 1/3 inning outing yesterday, but I saw some very encouraging signs from the 23-year old pitcher. First off, Niese effortlessly incorporated his curveball into his repertoire and got some much needed whiffs to escape some jams.
Niese did not factor in the decision, so he remains at 0-1 with a respectable 3.68 ERA and 18 strike outs. Niese's age shows in his command as he did walk 5 batters yesterday, sending his WHIP up near the stratosphere at 1.86. He has 11 walks on the season, a number that will need to subside if he wants to have any success this season.
Niese is still very young and working on the command of his secondary pitches. Fortunately, his hard breaking pitches match well with Citi Field, improving his chances of success in the spacious ballpark. His next start will come against the Phillies on Friday.
