The Pirates added former Padres pitcher Sean Gallagher to the fold today and have placed him in the bullpen. Gallagher, 24, was a highly regarded prospect with the Cubs before being traded to the Athletics and then to the Padres.
Gallagher owns a career 5.57 ERA in 60 appearances, but the Pirates think very highly of him and view him as a swing-and-miss type pitcher.
"He's got four pitches, and he's started a lot, so he could be a good fit for us there," Russell said.
The team picked up Gallagher after a recommendation from a staffer who worked with him in the Venezuelan Winter League.
