Nationals extend Livan Hernandez

Nationals pitcher and one of the leagues most durable pitchers, Livan Hernandez has been awarded a one year contract extension worth one million dollars. Hernandez, 35, is having his best year in nearly five seasons, posting a 3.49 ERA in 27 starts.

"We think he has earned it," general manager Mike Rizzo said. "Livan is in great condition, a cornerstone and a leader of the pitching rotation. [Considering] the time he spends with our young guys, it's something that we thought that he earned and deserved. Throughout the winter, we know he is part of the ballclub. We know every fifth day we will be handing him the ball and he'll have a quality start. "

Hernandez is not much more than a reliable middle of the rotation starter. He can eat up innings, but he rarely shuts down opponents and needs pretty good run support to have success.
