UPDATE: 7:22 PM EST: Juan Rivera will be going to the Blue Jays in the deal, and the Angels will receive cash, according to Rosenthal.

The Angels have acquired Vernon Wells and his mega contract in a deal that was not seen coming. As reported by Ken Rosenthal, the Blue Jays acquired Mike Napoli in return for Wells.

Mike Napoli will split time with J.P. Arencibia and Jose Molina at catcher, and will split time with Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Lind at first base. The Rays were interested in Napoli originally.

Vernon Wells will join the Angels outfield, which consists of three center fielders now. With Peter Bourjos, Torii Hunter, and Vernon Wells, Bobby Abreu will see the majority of the playing time at DH.

This move affects Vladimir Guerrero, as the Angels will likely have no interest in him anymore. While their original amount of interest is unknown, they were identified as a possible landing spot.

Earlier this offseason Wells said that he is not worth the 7 year $126 million contract he signed after the 2006 season. The Angels will hope he was wrong.
