We've known for a while now that the Red Sox plan to fill former GM Theo Epstein's role with his former assistant, Ben Cherington, but now we have word of when it's actually going to happen. According to Maury Brown of the Biz of Baseball, the Sox are holding a press conference at 3 p.m. tomorrow afternoon to announce Cherington's promotion.
Cherington, 37, has been a key voice in Boston for years now as Epstein's key right-hand man and assistant GM, but now he's taking the helm with the Sox following his mentor's departure to Chicago. He's officially being promoted to Executive Vice President and General Manager, and he should be the primary influence in the organization in terms of baseball operations.
