Phillies GM On Payroll, Jimmy Rollins, Bullpen, Corner Bat

Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. spoke with David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News regarding the team's payroll flexibility, bringing back shortstop Jimmy Rollins, future additions for the bullpen and bench. Let's take a look at the highlights:

  • The Phillies still have enough financial flexibility to bring back Jimmy Rollins and possibly even take on another significant contract. Of course, it all depends on your definition of "significant".
  • Not in the plans is another reliever. Relievers Jose Contreras, Antonio Bastardo will be the bridge to newly signed Jonathan Papelbon. Other arms in the 'pen will depend on who wins jobs out of spring training.
  • Outside of shortstop, the Phillies will look to shore up their bench. Currently the only bench player under contract for 2012 is Jim Thome. Bringing on a backup third baseman and/or a left field bat that can compete with John Mayberry Jr. for playing time makes most sense, Murphy says.
