Numerous Teams In On Heath Bell, Padres Not Among Them

Numerous teams are in pursuit of right-handed reliever Heath Bell, writes Bill Center of Sign On San Diego. Bell, 34, is coming off a down season but is still ranked as a Type A free agent. That hasn't caused teams to shy away, according to Bell himself.

"My agents have told me numerous other teams are interested with most of those on the East Coast," said Bell."I told my guys that if there is any shot for San Diego, hold onto it. But I haven't really heard anything from the Padres since they changed general managers. Right now, I have no idea what to expect.

While Bell has always expressed his love for San Diego and would like to return, he is looking for a three-year deal. The 34-year-old went far as to say there may even be one out there for him.

"But I think there's going to be a three-year deal out there from someone. And that's what I'd like to have. I'd rather stay on the West Coast. But I still have a home in Florida."

Among teams interested could be the Blue Jays and Red Sox. But both teams have a history of shying away from offering multi-year deals to relievers. The Red Sox may not even need a "closer" if they believe Daniel Bard is ready for the 9th inning.
