Now that the Cubs have all but announced Dale Sveum as their newest manager, eyes turn to the ever more puzzling situation in Boston, where some are speculating that new GM Cherington is being overruled by President and CEO Larry Luchino. Here's the latest:
-
Would Red Sox Target Sandberg? - chicagotribune.com
"Sandberg was not among the initial group of candidates interviewed by the Red Sox, but Lucchino and Cherington said late Wednesday night that they are expanding the search. Along with ESPN’s Bobby Valentine, Sandberg is arguably the biggest name available. The guys who have been interviewed and are reportedly still in play are Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr., Blue Jays first base coach Torey Lovullo and Tigers third base coach Gene Lamont." -
Daniel Bard Could be an option to Start - The Providence Journal
But the Red Sox need two starters to fill out their rotation, too, and there's no question Ben Cherington will discuss the possibility of using Bard as a starter with whichever manager he chooses. Bard has the build and the pitch mix to be at least a back-end starting pitcher, and 180 quality innings are more valuable to a team than 60 outstanding innings. -
Sources: Red Sox expected to replace Craig Shipley as director of international scouting - WEEI
"Shipley was one of the Red Sox’ first front office hires under GM Theo Epstein in 2002. While Shipley could be offered another position in the organization, he may also decide to leave the Sox after nine years to pursue other opportunities." -
Boston Red Sox should consider Detroit Tigers Lloyd McClendon in expanded managerial search - Jon Paul Morosi
"McClendon is a close confidante of Tigers manager Jim Leyland. He’s learned to manage games and players from one of the best in the business. In a candidate pool that is short on big-league managerial experience, McClendon’s pedigree would stand out."
"In fairness to the Sox, executives throughout baseball keep saying that the pool of managerial candidates is thin. Still, the Boston job should be one of the most coveted in the game, a magnet for the best and the brightest."
