Bobby Valentine to Manage Boston Red Sox

After many conflicting reports throughout the past few weeks, Alex Speier of WEEI is reporting that the Boston Red Sox will name Bobby Valentine their new manager. We heard yesterday that it came down to either Gene Lamont or Valentine as the next Boston bench boss, and many reports leaked out today that it will indeed be Valentine.

Valentine has been working at ESPN and his last MLB managing job was with the New York Mets from 1996-2002, and then he managed in Japan before working with ESPN, and now will be managing the Red Sox.

The interesting story from this is the power struggle with Red Sox president Larry Lucchino and newly named general manager Ben Charington. It seemed obvious that Charington wanted Dale Sveum before he went to the Chicago Cubs, but Lucchino insisted on interviewing more candidates, and Valentine seemed like his guy all along. And as principal John Henry recently said, "Larry Lucchino runs the Red Sox."
