The Philadelphia Phillies opened their month-long season of exhibition games by defeating the Florida State Seminoles 8-0 Thursday afternoon in a Spring Training contest in Clearwater, FL. First-base slugger Ryan Howard collected a two-run double during a four-run fourth inning that propelled Philly to its first victory.

According to SB Nation Philadelphia, seven Phillies pitchers, mostly of Triple-A level, combined for a four-hit shout out:"Mike Stutes was particularly impressive striking out the side in the sixth," wrote Jason Brewer. "However, Justin De Fratus, Michael Schwimmer & Scott Matheison all threw scoreless innings."
Other Philly starters to play for a brief period were: Shane Victorino, Carlos Ruiz, Raul Ibanez and Placido Polanco. (Click here for the box score.)
The Phillies Spring Training schedule features Philadelphia facing the New York Yankees Friday afternoon. Starting pitcher Cole Hamels will see his first action of the year.
