Ken Rosenthal originally reported and Rob Biertempfel confirmed that the Texas Rangers were interested in Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan, and made a call inquiring about him. Hanranhan has had an exceptional year, posting a 1.66 ERA and converting all 13 save opportunities. However, the Pirates have rejected the idea and are not actively shopping Hanrahan.
Matthew Pouliat suggests that this indicates that the Rangers are looking for additional bullpen help and perhaps intend on moving Neftali Feliz to the rotation.
Notes:
- Joel Hanrahan is making $1.4 million and is under Pittsburgh control through 2013, but may be in line for a raise to $5 million if he closes throughout the season.
- Rangers may have to include prospect Jurickson Profar to get any action on a deal.
- Other options for the Rangers may include Toronto's Frank Francisco for Mike Napoli, speculates C. Trent Rosencrans.
