The DL on the DL

Updates from around Major League Baseball on players who are "freshly back" from the disabled list or "newly gone" to the DL.

Freshly Back:
  • Los Angeles Angels CF Vernon Wells: Wells was on the DL for a total of 28 days after being placed there on May 10th with a pulled right groin. Wells has been a let-down to the Angels this year, batting .183 with a .224 OBP. Wells was traded to the Angels this summer for Mike Napoli and Juan Rivera. Utility man and rookie Alexi Amarista was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake.
  • Boston Red Sox SS Marco Scutaro: Scutaro was on the DL for a total of 30 days after being placed there on May 8th with a strained left oblique. Jose Iglesias was initially called up to fill in as a defensive replacement for Scutaro, but was sent back down to Triple-A Pawtucket when Drew Sutton was called up. A corresponding move is forthcoming.
  • Minnesota Twins LHP Francisco Liriano: Liriano was on the DL for a total of 15 days after being placed there on May 23rd with left shoulder inflammation. Aside from his no-hitter earlier in the season, Liriano has struggled, posting a 5.30 ERA. In his return to the rotation, Liriano went five innings on 84 pitches, giving up one unearned run on three hits and three walks. He struck out seven. Anthony Slama was optioned to Triple-A Rochester.
Newly Gone:
  • Oakland Athletics LHP Brett Anderson - 15-Day DL, Left elbow soreness: Bad news for Anderson, who has already spent time on the DL for elbow problems twice last year. Tommy John surgery has been rumored for Anderson, who is a promising young pitcher. Lefty Bobby Cramer was called up from Triple-A Sacramento.
  • Colorado Rockies CF Dexter Fowler - 15-Day DL, Left abdominal strain: This is Fowler's first trip to the DL since August 2009, when he was hurt fouling a pitch off his knee. Fowler had not been playing well this year, as his strikeout rate was up to 31% from his career 26% rate. Charlie Blackmon was called up to make his major league debut from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
  • Oakland Athletics 2B Mark Ellis - 15-Day DL, Right hamstring strain: Ellis left the June 6th game in the fifth inning after hurting his hamstring. Ellis missed time last year with a left thigh injury, but this is the first hamstring injury in his career. Jemile Weeks, brother of Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks, was called up for his major league debut from Triple-A Sacramento. In his debut, Weeks went zero for four with a strikeout in the lead-off spot.
