It's been a busy day in the baseball world with a trade and a waiver claim, that could overshadow the smaller moves that have been made.Let's keep track of today's players who have been designated for assignment:
- The Baltimore Orioles have designated outfielder Felix Pie for assignment, according to Baltimore Sun's Dan Connolly. Blessed with the most awesomest last name among active players (even if it isn't pronounced paɪ), you can't hit .220/.264/.280 in 175 plate appearances and have a role on a major-league team. The Orioles will replace Pie with 25-year-old outfielder Matt Angle.
- The Los Angeles Dodgers have designated catcher Dioner Navarro for assignment, according to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times. Navarro, 27, hit .193/.276/.324 with 5 homers as the backup catcher this season. Navarro was statistically having his best year since 2008, when he made the all-star roster serving as the Rays starting catcher. The Dodgers will use the roster spot to recall A.J. Ellis from Triple-A Albuquerque, the team announced.
- The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated left-handed reliever Joe Beimel for assignment. MLBDD's Justin Bopp wrote about it here.
