Heath Bell Claimed By Giants

1:40 PM EST: ESPN's Jim Bowden quotes a Padres source who believes it is "unlikey" Heath Bell is traded. At worst, the Giants have blocked the teams in front of them from acquiring Heath Bell.

The San Francisco Giants have been awarded the waiver claim on San Diego Padres closer Heath Bell via waivers, according to ESPN's Buster Olney

Thousands of players go through waivers, but Olney believes this one may have some legs to do it depending on the severity of closer Brian Wilson's elbow. If that is the case, the two teams have 48 hours to strike a deal or the Padres will be able to pull Bell off waivers.

Bell, 33, is in the midst of a down season despite pitching in spacious PETCO park. While he is posting a 2.55 ERA, the closer is no longer racking up the strikeouts he once did. Bell's strikeout percentage is at 18.2%, his previous low was 20.9% back in 2005 and his career rate is 24.9%. Bell's walk rate is similar to recent years, however.
