The Philadelphia Phillies have signed Joel Pineiro to a minor league deal which includes a spring training invite, according to Jayson Stark of ESPN. The signing potentially gives the Phillies a bit more depth behind Halladay, Lee, Hamels, Blanton, and Worley, especially with injury concerns around Blanton.
Pineiro, 33, enters his 13th season and is a career 4.44 ERA righty known for inducing groundballs. Most of his first seven seasons were spent with the Seattle Mariners, but since then he's seen stints in Boston, St. Louis, and most recently spent time with the Los Angeles Angels. Last season he pitched 145 innings at a 5.13 ERA clip while going 7-7.
