The Oakland Athletics announced today that to make room for the newly signed DH/OF Johnny Gomes, the club has designated infielder Adrian Cardenas for assignment.
The Gomes signing was announced as official earlier today, and they had to make room for him on the 40 man roster, Cardenas being the casualty. At 24 years old, Cardenas spent most of the season on Oakland's Triple A team, the Sacramento River Cats. He hit .314 with an on base percentage of .374 and slugged at .418. He played at left field, shortstop, second base and third base with 545 plate appearances.
A draft pick from 2006, Cardenas has played all six of his professional baseball seasons in the minor leagues. Now on waivers, he is someone that a team that needs some depth might take a chance on, maybe a national league team with bench troubles. Gomes is expected to be the Athletics fourth outfielder.
