For the Chicago Cubs, pitchers and catchers report to major league spring training February 18 in Mesa, Arizona and they have invited twenty-one non-roster players to camp, the club announced in a press release today. While some are prospects, like Trey McNutt and Brett Jackson, there are also a couple other of names of notice in Edgar Gonzalez and Matt Tolbert.
Gonzalez is a 33-year-old utility man, who last appeared in the majors with the Padres back in 2009. He played in Japan in 2010 and came back to the majors last year when he signed with the Giants.
Matt Tolbert, 29, is also another guy who can play all over the diamond and is a former product of the Twins. In the past four years, Tolbert hit .230/.288/.319 with 3 home runs in 680 plate appearances at the big level.
