The Baltimore Orioles claimed first baseman/outfielder Steve Pearce off waivers from the New York Yankees on Saturday, the team has announced:
The Orioles have claimed OF Steve Pearce off waivers from the Yankees. RHP Oliver Drake has been recalled and placed on the 60-day DL.
— Baltimore Orioles (@Orioles) September 29, 2012
The move from New York to Baltimore will mark Pearce's second stint with the Orioles this season. The 29-year-old Pearce began the year with the Yankees, then had his contract purchased by the Orioles in early June. Pearce appeared in twenty-eight games for Baltimore before moving on to Houston and then back to New York in late August.
The Yankees designated Pearce and pitcher Justin Thomas for assignment earlier this week to make room on the roster for Brett Gardner and David Aardsma.
Overall, Pearce is batting .239/.328/.377 with four home runs in sixty-one games on the season. As he was picked up well beyond the August 31 deadline, Pearce will not be eligible for Baltimore's playoff roster.
