While he doesn’t think it would be the right move, Ryan Lawrence of philly.com wouldn’t be surprised if Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. landed a "big fish" this offseason, such as Michael Bourn, B.J. Upton or even Josh Hamilton:
With all of that said, don't bet against Amaro landing one of the big fish in free agency. With centerfield being an absolute need, B.J. Upton and Michael Bourn would qualify as a typical Amaro big splash.
After trading Hunter Pence and with a pending TV contract, Amaro has money to burn this winter. Lawrence notes that the GM hasn’t had a trade deadline or offseason come and go without making some sort of significant move.
Though he doesn’t expect Amaro to heed his call, Lawrence feels the Phillies should peruse free agency’s bargain big this offseason rather than overspend on its top targets. He says that Angel Pagan could offer a better bang for your buck option in center for Philadelphia, while Torii Hunter would provide the team with a capable corner outfielder at a reduced cost.
