Angels rumors: LA's top priority is re-signing Zack Greinke

Re-signing right-hander Zack Greinke is the top priority of the Los Angeles Angels.

Re-signing right-hander Zack Greinke is the top priority of the Los Angeles Angels, reports Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com:

The Angels' top offseason priority is finding a way to re-sign Greinke ("huge priority," one Angels person said).

Yesterday the Angels dealt right-hander Ervin Santana to the Kansas City Royals. They are looking to do the same with right-hander Dan Haren, as they are expected to complete a trade by this weekend.

If they are able to do so, or at least decline Haren’s option for 2013, the club would be left with two starting pitchers from 2012 under contract for next season; Jered Weaver and C.J. Wilson.

While they could have elected to retain Santana and/or Haren for next season and put off the hunt for starting pitching help, they’ve seemingly decided to put all their eggs into Greinke’s basket. The right-hander appears to be open to re-signing with Los Angeles, but since he’s the top starting pitcher available this winter his market could take a while to develop.

After being acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers this summer Greinke posted an ERA of 3.53 over 13 starts for the Angels.
