Orioles rumors: Baltimore interested in Jonny Gomes

The veteran outfielder is looking to cash in on a successful year in Oakland.

The Baltimore Orioles are interested in signing free-agent outfielder Jonny Gomes, a source has told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports:

Gomes, 31, had a resurgent year for the Athletics in 2012, hitting .262/.377/.491 with eighteen home runs in ninety-nine games, but earning only $1 million in the process. The veteran platooned at designated hitter and in the corner outfield spots in Oakland with Seth Smith, a role he is likely to continue wherever he eventually signs.

Gomes' gaudy numbers this season were well above his career norms, so he may be in line for some regression, but that should not stop him from receiving a hefty raise – and possibly a multi-year deal – this winter. The Orioles have Adam Jones and patrolling center and right field for the foreseeable future, but Gomes could be an answer for what was a revolving door in left field for Baltimore in 2012.
