Kubatko adds that the Orioles were hoping to retain Tolleson, who the White Sox view as a "potential super utility" player.
Tolleson, 29, signed with the Orioles last Nov. after spending the 2011 season with the Oakland Athletics and San Diego Padres. He spent most of the year with Baltimore’s Triple-A squad, hitting .278/.358/.346 with eight doubles and one home run.
Tolleson did appear in 29 games for the Orioles, but he only hit .183/.227/.310 with three doubles and two home runs over 71 at-bats. His only other major league appearances came in 2010 when he hit .286/.340/.408 with three doubles and one home run over 49 at-bats for the A’s.
During his time in the minors Tolleson has manned every position but first base and catcher and hit a combined .282/.370/.407 over eight seasons.
