Blue Jays designate Joel Carreno for assignment

The Toronto Blue Jays have designated right-hander Joel Carreno for assignment, the team has announced.

Carreno was designated for assignment to make room on the Blue Jays’ roster for the players they acquired, including Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, Jose Reyes, John Buck and Emilio Bonifacio, from the Miami Marlins in the blockbuster trade that was recently approved by MLB commissioner Bud Selig.

Carreno appeared in 11 games, including two starts, for the Blue Jays this season. The 25-year-old maintained an ERA of 6.14 with 14 walks and 16 strikeouts over 22 innings pitched.

It marked Carreno’s second season pitching at the major league level, as he made his debut in 2011 with Toronto. That year he also appeared in 11 games, all in relief, and allowed two runs on 11 hits with four walks and 14 strikeouts over 15 2/3 innings.

Over seven seasons in the minors the right-hander owns a career ERA of 3.48 with 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings and 3.1 walks per nine innings.
