The San Diego Padres have designated right-hander Cory Burns for assignment, the team has announced:

In corresponding roster moves, the Padres added right-hander Adys Portillo and outfielders Yeison Asencio and Jaff Decker to their 40-man roster.

Burns was selected in the eighth round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Cleveland Indians. After spending three seasons with the Tribe he was traded to the Padres in exchange for outfielder Aaron Cunningham.

Burns began the 2012 season with the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate, and he went on to post an ERA of 3.14 over 54 appearances spanning 66 innings. Over four seasons in the minors the right-hander has maintained an ERA of 2.36 with 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings compared to 2.2 walks per nine innings.

Burns went on to make his major league debut with San Diego last year, maintaining an ERA of 5.50 over 17 appearances. The 25-year-old struck out 18 and walked 10 over 18 innings.
