Red Sox management and ownership met with Mike Napoli this weekend

Napoli has drawn interest from several clubs, and is seeking a four-year contract.

Boston Red Sox officials met with free agent Mike Napoli this weekend, according to Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe.

Also this afternoon, Jim Bowden of ESPN tweeted that Napoli is "determined" to get a four-year contract. The Red Sox are facing competition from the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers. Napoli is set to meet with the Rangers sometime this week.

Napoli, 31, had a down year last season, failing to replicate the sterling numbers he produced in 2011. He hit .227/.343/.469 with 24 home runs with the Rangers in 2012. He made 72 appearances behind the plate, 28 at first base and nine at designated hitter.

The Red Sox already have Jerrod Saltalamachia and Ryan Lavarnway behind the plate, and added David Ross earlier this offseason. With plenty of options at catcher and David Ortiz back as the DH, it would Napoli would be the best fit as their everyday first baseman.
