Free-agent catcher/first baseman Mike Napoli will meet with Texas Rangers officials in Arlington on Tuesday, reports Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram:
The Texas Rangers could have a better feel for which direction they will go at catcher in 2013 after a meeting today with free agent Mike Napoli.
Napoli and his agent, Brian Grieper, will meet with Rangers officials as each side tries to get a better understanding of where things stand, said a baseball source.
The veteran catcher’s visit to Arlington is his second meet-and-greet with a club in the past week. The 31-year-old met with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway over the weekend, who have made him their "No. 1 priority". Napoli is also being courted by the Seattle Mariners, but no visit has been arranged of yet.
Of the three teams pursuing the slugger, only the Rangers have plans to use Napoli at catcher. Both the Red Sox and Mariners view him as an option at first base and/or designated hitter. Napoli has expressed an openness to play any position so long as he receives regular playing time, but is "determined" to get a four-year contract wherever he ends up.
