Mets rumors: Agreement with David Wright "improbable" this week

According to one source who’s spoken with the team, it’s "improbable" that the New York Mets and third baseman David Wright reach an agreement on a contract extension this week, reports Jayson Stark of ESPN:

It was initially reported that the Mets had offered Wright the same six-year, $100 million contract extension the Tampa Bay Rays agreed to with third baseman Evan Longoria. Later it was reported that New York had in fact offered Wright a seven-year contract with a total value well over $100 million.

While the Mets and Wright’s representation appear to be exchanging offers back and forth, they are not close to reaching an agreement, according to Stark. Wright is entering the final year of his current contract that will pay him $16 million in 2013.

Wright, who turns 30 in December, owns a career line of .301/.381/.506 over his nine seasons at the major league level.
