Angels, Ryan Madson agree to one-year contract

UPDATE 1:51 PM EDT - Ryan Madson has passed his physical, completing the one-year agreement with the Angels, reports Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times. Madson will receive a base salary of $3.5 million, his contract includes $2.5 million in roster bonuses and he can receive up to $1 million for games finished.

Original - Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim general manager Jerry Dipoto's top priority this offseason was upgrading the bullpen that struggled last season and the second-year GM may have done that, signing free-agent reliever Ryan Madson to a one-year contract, as first reported by Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.

Madson signed a one-year deal last season with the Cincinnati Reds, turning down more money and years in hopes of re-setting his market value for this offseason. That plan backfired, however, as the Scott Boras client required Tommy John surgery after suffering an elbow injury before the season began.

Madson will likely be the team's closer, moving right-handed reliever Ernesto Frieri into the eight-inning role and the rest of the relievers down the totem pole.

The Angels hope Madson can help cure their problems of late-inning relief problems after the Angels blew 22 saves as a team last year, tied for most in the league.
