Major League Baseball has announced a 25-game suspension of Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz for violating the MLB drug policy, according to a report by Adam Rubin of ESPN New York:
MLB announces #Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz 25-game suspension after testing positive for an amphetamine.
Rubin mentions in a follow-up tweet that it is 25 games because it is not a performance-enhancing drug, otherwise it would have been the normal 50-game suspension.
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN tweets that the Phillies are "dissapointed" by the news.
#Phillies issue a statement saying they support MLB drug testing agreement and are "disappointed'' by Ruiz's violation.
Ruiz becomes a free agent after the 2013 season, because of a 4-year extension he signed that came into effect for the 2010 season, for a total of $13.35 million.
Ruiz, 33, hit .325/.394/.540 in 421 plate appearances this season. Behind the plate he threw out 34% of would-be base stealers in 2012, and is regarded as a good game-caller.
