The Cleveland Indians designated left-hander Rafael Perez for assignment to make room on its 40-man roster for left-hander Nick Hagadone, the team has announced:

Perez missed most of 2012 after requiring shoulder surgery. Entering last season, Perez had been a mainstay in the Indians’ bullpen over the past two years. From 2010-11 the left-hander maintained an ERA of 3.12 over 141 appearances spanning 124 innings with 5.0 strikeouts and 3.2 walks per nine innings.

Over eight appearances for the Indians prior to his injury last season Perez allowed three runs on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings. The 30-year-old owns an ERA of 3.64 over seven seasons at the major league level.

The Indians acquired Hagadone along with Bryan Price and Justin Masterson from the Boston Red Sox in July of 2009 in exchange for Victor Martinez. The former top prospect owns a career ERA of 5.70 over 36 appearances at the major league level.
