Padres trade Cory Burns to Rangers

The San Diego Padres have traded right-hander Cory Burns to the Texas Rangers in exchange for a player to be named later.

The San Diego Padres have traded right-hander Cory Burns to the Texas Rangers in exchange for a player to be named later, reports Jerry Crasnick of ESPN:

Burns made his major league debut last season, posting an ERA of 5.50 over 17 appearances for the Padres. He struck out 18 and walked 10 in 18 innings.

Burns was selected in the eighth round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Cleveland Indians. After spending three seasons in the Indians’ minor league system the right-hander was traded to the Padres in exchange for Aaron Cunningham.

Burns spent a majority of the 2012 season with the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate. The 25-year-old maintained an ERA of 3.14 over 54 appearances spanning 66 innings with 10.6 strikeouts and 2.3 walks per nine innings. Over four seasons at the minor league level he owns a career ERA of 2.36 with 11.2 strikeouts and 2.2 walks per nine innings.
