Red Sox rumors: Boston targeting Torii Hunter

The veteran Hunter could join former Twins' teammate David Ortiz in Boston.

The Boston Red Sox have expressed interest in signing free agent outfielder Torii Hunter, sources have told Rob Bradford of WEEI:

According to a baseball source, the Red Sox have shown interest in free agent outfielder Torii Hunter.

The 37 year-old (who turns 38 in July) has expressed interest in playing in Boston in the past, in large part because of the presence of his longtime friend, Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz.

"I'm open to anybody, especially if David is there...

"David is one of my guys. We were roommates in Minnesota and he's one of my brothers. He's one of my best friends in baseball. That makes it more impressive."

Ortiz, who just re-upped with the Red Sox for two more seasons, has already been in contact with his former roommate Hunter about joining him in Boston. Hunter reportedly told Ortiz that he was only interested in signing with the club if Big Papi remained with the Red Sox.

Hunter was not offered a qualifying offer by the Angels before hitting the free agent market, which makes him a much more affordable commodity this winter. The right fielder put together his best offensive season for the Angels in 2012, hitting .316/.365/.451 with sixteen home runs in one hundred forty games.
