Giants sign Chad Gaudin to minor-league deal

The veteran right-hander has a chance to join San Francisco's bullpen next season.

The San Francisco Giants have signed veteran right-hander Chad Gaudin to a minor-league contract, reports Janie McAuley of the Associated Press. While unstated in the report, it is likely that Gaudin's contract includes an invitation to spring training in March.

The 10-year MLB veteran spent the 2012 season in the Miami Marlins' bullpen, posting a 4.54 ERA and 7.4 K/9 rate in 69⅓ innings. The right-hander has been a one-year rental for most of his career, pitching for eight different squads in his decade of big-league ball.

Gaudin did work for two seasons primarily as a starter, but has worked exclusively out of the bullpen for the past three years, posting a 5.16 earned-run average and 7.6 strikeouts per nine. The right-hander struggled terribly with giving up the long ball in his first few seasons as a full-time reliever, but brought his numbers down considerably last season with the Marlins.

Gaudin owns a career 4.63 ERA and a 1.71 strikeout-to-walk ratio in over 700 big-league innings.
